May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month! Skin cancer is America's most common type of cancer. In the arborist industry, skin protection is a necessity when working outside!
Luckily, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers. Wear sunscreen. Don't go tanning. Wear long sleeves and a hat when working outside. Don't burn your skin to provide a "base" for the rest of summer.

Most of the problems in trees emanate from poor soil composition or structure. Common soil issues include lack of nutrients, soil compaction, and acidity. Improving the composition and structure of your soil will improve tree health.
Aerating and de-compacting soils can aid in increasing air and water flow in the soil. Aeration will also assist in root propagation.
To aerate the earth, you drill holes into the earth using an auger. Application of organic manure also helps in soil aeration.
Artificial fertilizer can also help to improve soil nutrition. Nutritious soils will support leafing and shoot growth.
Compost can fend off pest and diseases. Excessive application of artificial fertilizer can be harmful to trees and the environment.

Do you have a blog that you update consistently? If not, start one now! A blog is a great way to connect with your followers and clients and keep your website updated in a simple and easy way.
With spring approaching, you could potentially write about prepping your trees for spring/summer, pruning techniques for specific trees, or the importance of Plant Health Care. If there is a service you offer that you want to elaborate on or draw attention too, focus on that!
Once you have the article written (no more than 1 page), post it to your social media channels! This is also a great way to link directly to your website and encourage people to check out not only your post, but also the other tools you have available on your website!

Are you subscribed to arborist news on Google? Please do so now. There are thousands of publications and articles to choose from. Many of our clients have found that subscribing to news alerts saves them the time from scoping the internet for an article to post.
Pro Top: When you find multiple articles you like, save them all! I keep an abundance of articles linked in a draft in my email. That way, if I'm struggling the day of to find an article I like, I can circle back to the saved ones and post one of those. Just be sure to check dates - you don't want to be posting something from more than 6 months ago!
Additional news you could subscribe to on Google could be:
Tree News
US National Tree News
Arborist
Tree Care Industry
Additionally, you could simply share holiday safety tips depending on the time of year. Or, if your area is experiencing bad weather, share an article on that and discuss tree safety during the inclement weather.

Cooling and shading is another important tip for summer tree maintenance. Young sensitive trees should be shaded against excessive heat.
Landscaping materials such as water surfaces, structures, glass, and block walls can intensify heat stress on trees.
It is crucial that you carefully evaluate the choice of materials used in landscaping. Some materials used for mulching can also absorb heat and lead to heat stress.
